Description

Framed sampler measuring about 14 inches tall by 11 inches wide. Sampler reads "Rememberance is the sweetest flower, all of this world's perfuming, memory guards it sun or shower, friendship keeps it blooming." Above the text is a scene of two figures in colonial dress - a man and a woman - holding hands over what appears to be a fountain. Beneath the text there are three flowers, alternating blue and pink. Around the edge are pink and green flowers and vines. The color appears to have held up well and is most likely wool on cotton. According to the seller: "I bought this sampler at an estate sale in Stonington and talked to the great granddaughter of Mabel Gordon Imdohl/Imdahl who created the cross stitch in about 1880. Her grandmother had it framed and gave it to her mother on June 7, 1950 as a gift." The back of the framed cross stitch reads "presented to Wilhelmina Gordon Ryon about June 7, 1950. There is also a very faded stamp that reads "From John Branch & Son, Toys, Paints & Picture Frames, Mystic CT."
