Oil portrait of Samuel Denison Babcock (1822 - 1902)
Born in Stonington, the son of Benjamin Franklin Babcock and Maria Eells, Samuel D. Babcock lived at 53 Main Street, until he went to New York where he became involved in the world of commerce. A partner in the firm of Babcock & Ward, he was an eminently successful businessman. His obituary lists the many boards he served on; he had also been president of the New York Providence Boston Railroad, the New York Chamber of Commerce, and the International Bell Telephone Company.
In 1898, on August 8, with Erskine M. Phelps of Chicago, he deeded the land of Wadawanuck Square to the Borough of Stonington and later gave $8,000 for the building of the library.
