Oil portrait of Andrew Sterritt Mathews (1814 - 1884) by Phineas Stanton (1817-1867)
A. S. Mathews came to Stonington in 1837, as chief Engineer for the New York Providence and Boston Railroad. He was a friend and colleague of George Washington Whistler. He became general superintendant of the railroad, and remained in Stonington. He lived first on Pearl Street, later moved to the present Catholic Rectory. He was a director of the Ocean Bank and afterwards of the First National Bank of Stonington (1851-1884); Matthews Park is named for him.
