Daughter of Samuel and Polly Sloan Burtch, b. 20 Sep 1822, d. 9 Apr 1878. she was sixth of seven children when her mother died. She was raised by Deacon Robert S. Bottum and his wife Malvina. Mary was the first Stonington woman known to go to sea in a whaler, and possibly the first Connecticut or New England woman to travel so extensively on a whaler. Wrote a diary of her voyages. Malvina is said to have "disowned" her for going to sea, it was such a shocking thing to do.

Mary Louisa Burtch (1822-1878), called Molly, was the daughter of Samuel Burtch (1786-1836) and Mary (Polly) Sloan. Her beloved William Eldredge Brewster (b. 1813 d. at sea 1893) remarried in 1879 Harriet Louisa Holmes (1830-1911). All in Evergreen Cemetery.Collection
