Description

Blue and green bumper sticker from Antarctica that reads: "A woman's place" "Antarctica". In the late 1980s and into the 1990s, women were making progress in Antarctic research and field work, but still faced many challenges. The first all-female overwinter group was in 1990. In 1993, Ann Bancroft and Liv Arnesen led the first all-female expedition to the South Pole. Many women faced sexual harrassment, gender bias, physical and logistical challenges (availability of correct clothing sizes, navigating caring responsibilities), and a lack of support or sympathy for the needs of mothers. This bumper sticker was created at a time when women were becoming more involved and recognized in Antarctic research.
