Scope and Content

Collection of bills, cash reciepts, bank trust statements, probate records and property/town assessment records associated with the Theodore Dwight Palmer Estate, 1862-1875. Theodore Dwight Palmer was born, and died in Stonington, CT (August 29, 1816- January 15, 1865) - the son of Nathaniel Palmer and Mercy Brown, and the younger brother of the renowned Capt. Nathaniel Brown Palmer. He married Harriet Billings Palmer (d.1876) and together they had three children: Theodore Dwight Palmer, Jr., David Palmer and Coddington Billings Palmer. He was the brother of Capt. Nathaniel Brown Palmer and Capt. Alexander Palmer. He is buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Stonington, CT. Theodore was a mariner by profession and a successful captain with several noteworthy voyages to his credit. Included among his commands were the SAMUEL RUSSEL, ORIENTAL, and CELESTIAL. He was known as a "driver" given to fast voyages and hard sailing. On one occasion he managed a ninety day voyage between Canton, China and New York in the SAMUEL RUSSELL, and a record eighty-one day voyage in the ORIENTAL.
