Two different town announcements for recently passed by-laws.
The first is a by-law to regulate, amend and keep in repair the Public Walks and Streets in the Borough of Stonington. Passed and approved April 29, 1869 and signed by Samuel H. Chesebro, Clerk. The four sections of the main body give rights to the Warden and Burgesses to make changes to current road policies, spend money on the up-keep of roads and public walk ways. At the bottom, it reads: "In accordance with the above by-law, at a meeting of the Warden and Burgesses, June 7th, 1869, It was Voted, that the sifting and throwing of ashes, lobster shells, paper and other offensive substances, int he Public Walks and streets, is strictly forbidden." It bears the name of Ephraim Williams, Warden.
The second is a public notice of a by-law "to prevent nude persons bathing off the docks within the Borough fo Stonington. Passed and approved October 4, 1870." This announcement details that no nude bathing is allowed off the docks between 6am and 8pm, or the guilty party will be charged a penalty of six dollars and costs of prosecution. The Clerk at this time is Elias Babcock, Jr. The bottom note reads, "Notice is hereby given that the above By-Law will be strictly enforced. Stonington Borough, July 24, 1872. George D. Stanton, Warden."Collection
