Scope and Content

Collection of research notes (mostly handwritten notes) by David Gilchrist on George S. Brewster, a Stonington sea captain. George S. Brewster, son of Stephen and Hannah Fellowes Brewster, was born June 1811 and first went to sea at the age of 9. He had an extensive career in shipping, sealing and whaling out of Stonington port. He married Mary Lockwood Clark in 1832, and the pair had 5 children, all of whom died before the age of 7. In 1855 he retired from seafaring, and from that point until his death in 1882 was heavily involved in civic affairs in the town of Stonington - serving on various councils, the board of borough burgesses, as director of the Stonington Savings Bank, and as Justice of the Peace. He is buried with his wife at Robinson Burial Ground. Research notes include a list of Brewster's whaling voyages, information on the QUEBEC and CHARLESTON (owned in part by George S. Brewster), handwritten transcriptions from George S. Brewster's log books, a timeline of his maritime career 1820-1855, Robinson burial ground records, handwritten transcriptions of land and probate records.
