Description

Color snapshot and enlargement of the clock tower on the Congregational Church following the fire in 1971. Given to the Society by Harry Northup before his death. With note: "On November 20, 1971, the Congregational Church, now the United Church, was having a great deal of repair work done on the tower. Something happened after the workmen left for the night and a fire started in the tower. Luckily it was discovered in time to save the Church. As can be seen, the top of the tower was lifted off by a crane and taken to a shop in Groton, Connecticut. All the dimensions were lifted and a completely new top was constructed. It was then put back by the crane and secured to the braced up lower section. All the clock works were saved, cleaned, replaced and are still going today in 2008. In 2007 to 2008 an extensive overhaul repaired the tower, refinished the clock faces and hands with gold leaf, a new roof was put on the church building, the front side was painted and also the four huge pillars were scraped and painted. It really looks great."
