Ledger documenting the expenditures of the Ryon family business in Stonington from July 5, 1916 to December 31, 1917 from their account at the First National Bank. (Ocean Bank) Many prominent Stonington families and businesses are listed, along with amounts paid, goods received and quantities.
The family business was started by Charles Steven Burrows Ryon. He began dealing horses; buying them "out west" in Illinois and shipping them into the Stonington area for sale. He was engaged in the livery business and later, the sale of hay and grain. He was thrifty and from his humble beginnings managed to build up a small fortune. The family lived on a farm on the Westerly-Stonington Road, and then moved into the Borough to a grand house which they occupied for many years.
I believe the person writing in the ledger is his grandson, Charles Oswald Ryon. Charles Oswald Ryon was born January 14, 1898 at Stonington, the son of William and Eva Ryon. He had his bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Brown University in 1919. He was a violinist in the Norwich Symphony Orchestra and President of the Stonington Savings and Loan Association. He managed the family business until his retirement. He married Wilhelmina Gordon on June 23, 1924 and had four children.Collection
