Black and white photograph of the ALTURA and ASHLAND under construction at the Stonington Shipyard, winter 1917. Label on back reads: "These ships were built entirely of wood, for metal was in short supply and carpenters were more plentiful than iron workers. None were completed in time to help the war effort. LANSING finally left Stonington on August 19th and served in the Mediterranean for a couple of years carrying general cargo, then disappeared from the records. ALTURA was launched March 15, 1919 and saw limited service. ASHLAND followed three months later, her superstructure removed, her role altered by the course of war to a barge for carrying coal."
