Description

USS Fanning plaque given to Commander Marshall Stowell, USN, Commanding Officer. The USS Fanning was named for Nathaniel Fanning, born in Stonington in 1755. N. Fanning became a naval hero during the Revolutionary War which included fighting under the command of John Paul Jones on the USS Bonhomme Richard in the famous naval battle against the British frigate HMS Serapis. As a result of Nathaniel Fanning's heroism during the Revolutionary War the United States Navy has named three different ships the USS Fanning, including the USS Fanning (FF-1076) which was commissioned in 1971. Marshall Stowell of Stonington, Connecticut was the commanding officer of the USS Fanning from October 20, 1974 until July 13, 1976.
