Borough of Stonington - Street LampsEntry/Object ID
2018.273.011Scope and Content
A collection of documents relating to the installation of street lamps in the Borough between 1863 to 1886. Items relate to a generous donation by Richard F. Loper and Benjamin Horn to pay for the erection of street lamps and supply them with gas in 1863, but that was unfortunately denied due to the cost on the tax payers. This includes some receipts from the City of Providence, Lamp Department as well as from G and C.P. Hutchens of Providence in the late 1870s. Beginning in 1878, townspeople begin to donate the lamps in front of their homes to the town to maintain and then in the 1880s there are documents relating to the townspeople petitioning the town to erect street lamps on certain intersections or parts of streets.Collection
