Scope and Content

A collection of papers relating to the Barque "Blackstone" and Silas Beebe, Esquire. One of them is a letter from Thomson Watson of the Cape of Good Hope to Silas Beebe, concerning a cargo of whale oil put on board the "Blackstone" under Captain Fordham. Includes a bill of sale from Rufus Frink, John R. Wheaton, William Collins, Hail Collins, Jonathan Luther and Nathan M. Wheaton of Warren, RI to Silas Beebe, Esq of Groton for $9500, which includes information about the ship, 1833. A true copy of an insurance policy for $8000 taken from Richard Law Esq. to cover the Blackstone on its journey from New York to Mystic. An alphabet book for Agent's of the Barque Blackstone, refitted at Mystic Bridge, 1833 and kept by Silas Beebe, Esq. Bill of sale for 1/8 part of the ship "Blackstone" to THomas H. Faile of New York. This lists the owners in the "Blackstone" as Silas Beebe, Benjamin F. Stoddard, Charles Fordham, J.S. Hyde, George Haley, Jeremiah Holmes, Simeon Haley Junior, Benjamin F. Palmer, Joseph Cottrell, Elisha Faxon, WIlliam Pendleton, Joseph D. Mason, William W. Todd, Thomas H. Faile and John Denison, 1833. A receipt from the Cape of Good Hope, 1834 to pay Silas Beebe for goods delivered on the "Blackstone". A note of protest submitted by William Ennis of Newport, RI, 1835 by Thomas S. Andrews, master of the "Blackstone". The ship was leaving Saint Simon's Bay, Cape of Good Hope, and experienced rough weather. Fearing damage, the captain put into Newport, but did not want to be waylayed, hence the formal protest. Also included is a valuation of what Captain Fordham is liable for due to breaking certain rules outlined in a former agreement. There is also an accounting of cash paid and received by partial owners of the "Blackstone" 1833-1837 - names include Silas Beebe and William W. Todd.
