Scope and Content

Letter to Ella Crosby Williams (great grand-daughter of William Williams), May 13, 1829 My Dear Ella, I trust that you will pardon my delay in responding to your letter of over a month ago - and which gave us so much pleasure as we think very often of you. I have been very thankful for the little time we had together three years ago. ----- is the absorbing subject of the whole world now. We don't know what may be before us - to suffer and to do, but we know that the ultimate will be for the good of ALL because there is only one real power in all the universe - God in whom we trust. The more implicitly we trust and express this trust ------ even and look for guidance in all of our affairs, the more sweetly (?) we will be carried through all difficulties whatever they may be - and be able to help and bless all around us. We are truly living ina wonderful time - a great upheaval, but I ---------- that a new and beautiful world is beign born out of this. We must help, each of us, to this new birth by simply looking to and trusting this guidance every moment. I should not have kept those letters so long without having acknowledged them as they are precious to you. They are both letters to my grandmother rather than my mother - one by her son Benjamin, your grandfather. Your father was one of the sons mentioned in this letter. Your uncle Ephraim(?) was the other son. The other letter is to my grandmother from her sister Ruth C---- so you see neither of the letters belong to me. Thank you for sending them. I hope they will reach you safely, you must keep them together. I am troubled about having kept them so long, I know how your father cherished certain family relics. You will see that this Jer--- Crosby was your great aunt and my grandmother. I can understand now why my other was always very fond of your father - he was the boy - one of the little boys mentioned in your grandfathers letter. I can understand also why your father prized that letter. I have been interrupted many times since I commenced. We are is a very busy season just now but I did not wish delay longer. Please let me know if the letters reach you safely. I would like to know your plan for the summer. Lovingly, ?. E. Mc?
