Scope and Content

2 pages, handwritten notes (on New Milford Public Library stationery), research on Stonington house histories. 1. "The little gambel roofed house now standing on Elm St. just East of the stone house, used to stand on Main St. between Wall & Harmony & probably was the house Wm. Amos Chesebro speaks of as being the residence of Capt. Potter. It was moved from there to the corner of Harmony & Main & was used as a school house. From there it was moved once or twice till finally it was located on the East of Mr. Matthews barn, where it stood for some time propped up by spikes, that being part of the marsh & very wet. In rainy weather it was a pool of water all around it & was a favorite place for all the pigs of the neighborhood. In this house at one time lived the Collins who with two others robbed the Phoenix bank of Westerly. it was said that the money was hid in the big old oven still to be seen at the house. It is owned by the heirs of Matthew Gilmore." 2. "What is now the Colored Church originally stood on Water St. on the site of the present Capt. John Brown House. There Miss Pearl Quincy Rider kept schhol for ahile. It was moved from there to the present RR track between the Trumbull House & the "Old Fellows" House. When the R Road was built it was moved again: & finally was moved to its present locality on Water St. with of Broad & enlarged & altered to its present dimensions."
