Official military document promotion Thomas D. Sheffield to the position of Captain of Infantry Company E, of the 8th Regiment of Connecticut volunteers. Signed by William A. Buckingham, Commander-in-Chief in and over the militia for the state, and John H. Trumbull, Secretary of State.
Tucked inside the folded document is a small scrap of paper. One one side it shows what appears to be the letterhead for the Headquarters of the 8th Regiment of Connecticut Volunteers. There is a large, drawn portrait of General Ambrose Burnside in the center. The reverse appears to be part of a letter, perhaps written by Thomas Sheffield. It is only a few lines, but mentions the Dismal Swamp, in North Carolina.Collection
