Scope and Content

A half sheet of paper that appears to have been burned on the back left side. It is a commission for Captain Richard Wheeler, as tax collector of Stonington in 1820. Amos Gallup, Justice of the Peace, signed the document, which charges Wheeler with collecting taxes for mending and repairing the highways in said town of Stonington. Wheeler was responsible for laying out the same on the highways agreeable to the directions given. Any person refusing to pay will be jailed in New London. There are references to an attached list of those to be taxed, but it is not included with the document.
