Scope and Content

A collection of four letters written by John Denison Baldwin(1809-1883), to his brother Daniel Avery Baldwin(1811-1885) between 1834 and 1877. John and Daniel were the children of Daniel Baldwin (1785-1855) and Hannah Stanton(1786-1877). John was married to Lemira Hathaway (1813-1904). Daniel was married to 1. Betsy Rogers (1814-1851) and together they had six children. Daniel married 2. Lydia Amanda Colegrove and they had four more children. The letters mention coming home to visit the family, and how much John misses everyone. He mentions the death of his grandmother and his mother, as well as ruminates on his upbringing and the opportunities, or lack thereof, he was afforded in North Stonington. The last letter is to his cousin Victor, and discusses religion - a recurring theme in this series of letters.
