Scope and Content

A collection of documents relating to different members of the Babcock Family. The documents in this folder fall between 1734 and 1885. 1. A deed from Stephen and Samuel Richardson to Captain James Babcock, 1733 2. Transfer of note held by Joshua Babcock against Ross Coon to Samuel Crumb, 1784 3. A copy of a promotional letter published by Paul Babcock, Eliza Palmer's father, who owned the Borough Hotel. This was copied from "The Yankee" magazine. 4. A poem written and performed by Giles Babcock for the 26th annual convention of the Chi Psi fraternity, held in Providence, September 7, 1866. This copy given by the author to Mrs. S.D. Thatcher. 5. Letter to Emma A. Smith from David Sherman Babcock, January 24, 1867. Written on North American Steamship Company letterhead, concerning the sale of her property, and how he should like to own it. Made in reference to the house at 41 Main Street in the borough. 6. Oscar M. Barber and George H. Greenman collateral as executors to the will of Wealthy M. Babcock, August 26, 1877. 7. An essay on the life of Martha C. Babcock and a tribute to the memory of her husband, Edward W. Babcock, 1885. This was one of the prize essays at the High School commencement, Westerly RI June 1885, written by Miss Anna S. Pendleton and took third prize out of 14.
