"William C. Fellows was born in Mystic, Connecticut on April 19, 1845. His father, John Fellows, died in October of 1856, leving his wife, Mary Ann [Shaw] Fellows; a 24-year old daughter, Sarah, and 12-year old William.... ....Prompted by patriotism and State and Town bounties that would help provide for the welfare of his mother and sister, he, along with other men who were members of the local militia, enlisted in the 26th Regiment, Connecticut Volunteers.
