Diary of Benjamin Franklin Palmer (07/10/1793 - 04/28/1824), a descendant of Walter Palmer and resident of Stonington. He set off in the frigate Rolla from Stonington in December of 1813, and was quickly captured by his Majesty's frigate Loire. Benjamin F. Palmer was a prisoner for two years, serving time at Melville Island and Dartmoor Prison.
From a note at the beginning of the diary, by the author:
"Containing an accurate account of the Authors experience during, his imprisonment which commenced on the 10th day of December 1813. and ended on the 27th day of April 1815.----with some observatory remarks previous and ulterior to his imprisonment. untill his arrival again to the place of Departure.--
To which is added a Poem composed on Melville Island an address to the People of U States on the subject of exchange. Regulations of Dartmoore Prison-- Several Letters to and from John Mitchell Esq. American Agent at Halifax -- A Petition to James Munroe Esq. representing the conduct of H.G. Beasly Esq. American Agent in England Several Letters in favour of Doc. Magraths conduct with his answers. A petition to Sir. J.B. Warren to obtain the Release of an unfortunate Towsman and several Songs on Different Subjects -- illustrated with maps of the Different Prisons wher ethe Author has been confined by BFP"
