From the introduction: "As I write the introduction to this collection of my pieces, the year is '62 and, inescapably, so am I. This places me in time and also the theatre covered in this book, since I became a dramatic critic in 1925. That was 37 years and a good man "me's" ago. Four years later one of these me's wrote The Modern Theatre in Revolt, reprinted here in its brief entirety. It is a historical survey of the conflicts in theory and practice which, during the hundred years prior to the twenties, prepared the way for the theatre the twenties produced. That theatre and the theatre of the violently changing decades which have followed are the chief concern of these pages. Other pieces relating to the stage or about subjects which have drama in them are also included. But this is mainly a volume about the theatre in performance and people who, since the twenties, have contrinuted to it in various ways."
