A novel by Eleanor Perenyi, daughter of Grace Zaring Stone. Taken from inside dust jacket cover, "In September, 1863, Longstreet's Corps took off for north Georgia "to show the Army of Tennessee how it was done." Among them was young General Sam Hood, confident in his proven abilities as a solider, secure in the affections of his men. Behind him was the tumultuous Confederate capitol of Richmond - and the beautiful Buck Campbell. For the first time in his life, Sam Hood dared hope he had found someone to love him. No matter that their backgrounds differed in almost every respect: she was the daughter of a great slaveowner with vast rice plantations, the "wicked princess of the fairy story," and he, now an adopted Texan, was the son of a small Kentucky farmer.
Sam Hood was headed toward the hell of Chickamauga, and in that bloody battle he lost a leg. This was to prove the most important event of his life. It drove him into forcing Buck to make a decision, and it fired him with the burning ambition to prove himself all over again as a soldier. The command of the Army of Tennessee followed and the bitter defense of Atlanta against Sherman."
Included inside the front cover is a copy of a newspaper review from the New York Times, published March 6, 1955.
