A reprint of a manuscript originally published in 1829. Cover page reads: "Recollections of the Jersey Prison-ship; taken and prepared for publication from the original manuscript of the late Captain Thomas Dring of Providence, RI one of the prisoners."
Captain Thomas Dring was born in Newport, RI on August 3, 1758. After his confinement onboard the Jersey he entered the merchant service and attained the command of a ship. He sailed from Providence for many years and in 1803 retired from the sea. He died on August 8, 1825, just a year after penning this wonderful recollection of his time as a prisoner of war.
