Description

Cotton pieced quilt,"Ocean Waves" pattern, said to be made from fabrics washed ashore on Stonington Point from shipwreck off Block Island, c. 1870. There is a visual diagonal appearance 16 Patch Block of half squares the border consists of strips in a variety of fabbrics binding was applied with a printed cotton fabric to all edges a printed cotton fabric completes the backing chevron pattern quilting aa full cotton batting lifts the quilt If this is Louise Thayer's "handquilted bedspread" it was made by Louise when a girl with the help of her mother, Catherine Stanton Thayer, of Stonington. Louise's mother b. 1823 & d. after 1891. Catherine was dau. of James Stanton (1782-1860) and Desire Palmer (1786-1860).
