Description

Earle Henry Leonard was born in Pawcatuck on August 17, 1901 to Charles Leonard and Louisa Stillwell, the second of their three children. Charles and Louisa both worked as machinists in a local printing press manufactory, most likely C.B. Cottrell Company on Mechanic Street. The 1910 census recorded the family living on Williams Street in Pawcatuck. Earle graduated from Stonington High School in the class of 1919. He married Anna Beckmann on February 17, 1925 in New York City. Anna was born and raised in New York, the daughter of William Beckmann and Catherine Winter. At the time, Earle was employed as an electrical draftsman, and after their marriage, the couple settled in Queens. They welcomed a son, William Earle, in 1928. Sadly, Anna died in 1930 at the age of thirty one. A few years later, on October 26, 1934, Earle married his second wife, Alice Leslie Conrad, in Boston. Alice was born in Canada to Harold Conrad and Nettie Balcom, and emigrated to Newport, RI in 1923, where she took up work as a nurse. After their marriage, Alice and Earle had two more children: Donald and Robert. Earle continued working as a draftsman for utility companies, living in Queens. He died in June of 1957 and is buried in River Bend Cemetery in Westerly. His widow, Alice, died in 1996, and is buried with him in Westerly.
