Scope and Content

The Whalers "The danger and romance of whaling have become a part of American legend. Immortalized in novels like Moby Dick, stories of men risking their lives to hunt the largest creatures to ever live on earth captured the public imagination. Far from being a romantic quest, whaling was a vast, essential and dangerous enterprise in 19th-century America. At the center of this industry was the whaling vessel, the world's first floating factory. Aboard these incredible ships was everything needed to capture the whales and process their blubber into the oil that fueled the world's lanterns. GREAT SHIPS journeys back to the golden age of whaling to see how these revolutionary sips worked."
