Poem from newspaper "South of Cannon Square" by Percy Crompton
"A soldier was packing his duffel bag,
On a South Pacific Isle,
His buddies all asked him where he was bound,
And he answered with a smile:
'I'm heading for dear old Stonington,
In the good old U. S. A.;
To me, the best place under the sun;
I'm startin' for there today!
You can have all the screamin' monkeys,
And the gals with kinky hair,
There's a little sweetie waiting for me
South of old 'Cannon Square'"
Where is this beautiful, faraway place?"
Said one with a kinky head,
As he bid the natives a fond farewell,
He picked up his bags and said:
Where wavelets roll on a lovely shore,
From out of Long Island sound,
And seawalls temper the tempest roar,
And beauty is all around.
There my boat will be in the harbor
Safe and snug when I get there,
And I'll sure hug my pretty sweetheart
South of old 'Cannon Square'"
