Southern New England ash-splint basket, probably Pequot Indian. Basket was given to Mrs Rich by Pauline Miner Anderson. The basket had been in the Miner homestead since it was new.
The basket came from the old Miner House at #2 Cove Road, where the Riches lived from 1961-1973. They purchased the home from Paulene Anderson and Grace Palmer Miner, sisters who shared the family home. Paulene worked for Oliver Denison at Mystic Seaport. The House was built by Asa Miner c. 1830, the third house on the site. Zeke Liverant bought a lot of the furniture out of the house, including a slant front desk.. Other items were given to museums, including a miniature Patagonian canoe, to Mystic Seaport
The basket was evaluated at the Mashantucket-Pequot museum. It was found under the eaves of the house.
The Riches have many other interesting items, including an 1840 States Pottery jug and butter churn and mementoes from the wreck of The Commodore steamship in LI Sound.Collection
