Description

Memorial to Captain James Gibson who "Perished at sea," framed, with silver gilt paper. Memorial urns, a weeping woman, and willow tree design. An angel sits at the right of the funerary monument, which is covered with ivy. "In Memory of Captain James A. Gibson, who was washed from the deck of the Schooner H.B. Brewster and drowned September 8, 1877 off Little Egg Harbor, while on his way to Virginia. His body was found September 16th and buried at Little Egg Harbor, at which place it remained till the first week in December; when it was removed to Bay Shore and interred December 6, 1877 with the highest honors of the Masonic Fraternity, of which the deceased was an honored member. Aged 35 years, 9 months and 21 days." James E. Gibson was the son of John and Amanda Gibson and was born in Islip, NY in 1841/2. He worked as a fisherman. He married Eugenia Elizabeth Doxsee and they had three children: Howard, George and Rhoda. At the time of James' death, Howard was 11, George was 3, and Rhoda was 2. Eugenia died in 1925 at the age of 84. They are buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Bay Shore, NY.
