Description

Cyanotype with color enlargement, view of a steamship at the steamboat docks in Stonington Harbor. Given to the Society by Harry Northup before his death. With note: "A view of the harbor looking to the Northwest and the steamboat docks. There are three steamers tied up, probably waiting for passengers, coal and freight. The nearest vessel is the MAINE, part of the Stonington fleet, all named for the New England states. Note all the buildings at the facility and today they are all gone. There is a nice friendship type sloop at anchor and a neat little rowing skiff to the right. Today the harbor is packed with sail boats. In the distant background is Wamphassuc Point which at the time was a big farm, owned by Mr. Palmer of Rocky Ledge on route one. The grove of trees is where the main house, barn and sheds were located. There is a mass of pilings to the left, possibly to help the tug to turn the big vessels or used for dock lines to hold the boats off the piers in stormy conditions."
