Description

Fragment of bed curtain, supposedly from Napoleon's bed at St. Helena, in modern lacquer box. Said to have been found on St. Helena and brought back to Stonington by or for Harris Pendleton Jr. perhaps by Capt. Burtch. See photo of notes. Additional notes: Thomas Burtch (of the portrait? If so,1807-1888). Capt. H. Pendleton Sr was on the sloop Hero from Stonington to South Shetlands with other ships, 1821-23. Log book at Library of Congress. Capt. H. Pendleton Jr (1811-1880). After Napoleon's death in 1821, many Yankee ships started to stop at St Helena (before this too??) and by 1830, it was a major stopping place for the South Atlantic whalers. See, Julia Blackburn, The Emperor's Last Island: A Journey to St Helena, 1991. Many sources on relics of Napoleon, which have been prized by collectors since his death.
