Description

Wooden whirligig of a sailor wearing a black hat, blue shirt and white pants. Once held oars in his hands and was mounted on a stick. This is a "sailor boy" style whirligig, a very popular and typical design. This style of whirligig was made frequently by Nantucket's famous whirligig artist William H. Chase in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most "sailor boy" whirligigs were of a similar design, and included a tin-brimmed hat and a fabric ribbon. The whirligig worked when the wind blew on the oars, rotating the arms like a propellor.
