Sepia photograph with black and white copy print, view of hurricane damage along U.S. Route 1, 1938. Given to the Society by Harry Northup before his death. With note: "This picture of the Vargas Brothers' homes on route 1 was taken during the 1938 hurricane. The scene is at the stoplight where you turn right to go to Stonington Borough. Today the Shell Station would be behind the photographer. It's too bad that we cannot see the old Red Barn, that was a landmark for many years. It is just out of the picture, to the right. The Catholic cemetery is to the left out of the picture. I don't remember if it was badly flooded or not. The land is higher than the highway, so some of it must have escaped flooding."Collection
