Map created in 1893, shows the area from Mystic River to Noyes Beach in Watch Hill, and as far north as the Preston Town Line, Wyassup Lake, and Champlin Hill in RI.
A beautiful and well-detailed topographical map of the area. Very high quality color lithography. The US Geological Survey was created by act of Congress in 1879. It was charged with the "classification of the public lands, and examination of the geological structure, mineral resources, and products of the national domain." This task was driven largely by the need to inventory the vast lands added to the US by the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. This map was surveyed during the tenure of John Wesley Powell as Director of the USGS. Powell is famous for charting the Colorado River and Grand Canyon, and served as director of the USGS from 1881 to 1894.
Henry Gannett, Chief Geographer; Marcus Baker, Geographer in Charge; Triangulation and Coast Line by the USGS; Topography the US Coast and Geodetic Survey, E.B. Clark and F.P. Gulliver. Surveyed in 1888.Collection
