[Hartford] 1776 Jan 20 An order to "Pay Major Oliver Smith the sum of Three hundred and fifty pounds fourteen shillings and threepence half penny in full of Pay Roll wages billeting &c of himself & Company under his command Stationed at Stonington for Defense of Sea Coast from 20th October to 1th Jany instant..." Written by Thomas Seymour and signed by him and William Pitkin and Ezekiel. Oliver Smith signed receipt on verso for payment of his services (L350-14-3-1) Thomas Seymour was a member of the Hartford Pay Table Committee. William Pitkin was a jurist, a manufacturer of gunpowder in 1775, and Chief Justice of Connecticut for 19 years. Ezekiel Williams was Hartford sheriff, commissary of prisoners, and in charge of Newgate Prison.
