16 star 16 stripe Stonington Battle Flag of 1814
created as a standard for the local militia, the 8th Company of the 30th Connecticut Regiment
by a group of ladies from the Stonington Congregational Church
the estimated date of creation is just prior to 1803 when Ohio entered the union as the 17th state
Tennessee entered in 1796 as the 16th state
the flag measures 11.1 feet along hoist edge 17.9 feet along the top side
homespun sheeps wool with indigo and madder dyes
flax/cotton threads in handsewn stripes
stars are no longer present but their form is seen by the linen backing applied in 1948-49
stabilized in 1848-49 by conservators, Mrs. Richey and Amelia Fowler
backing of flax applied with multiple rows of silk zig zag stitching
