Plaque (made from spotted gum eucalyptus in the outline of a schooner), presented to the people of Stonigton (accepted by 1st selectman Rob Simmons) by Professor Douglas Gray, "In memory and appreciation of the courageous men of Stonington, Ct. who built the schooner INDEPENDENCE at American River, South Australia, 1803. Presented to the people of Stonington by the Rebuild INDEPENDENCE Group, September 2019." The schooner INDEPENDENCE was built by Capt. Isaac Pendleton and his crew while they were on a sealing expedition off the southern coast of Australia.
