Description

Double-breasted tailcoat worn by John Miner during the Battle of Stonington, reputedly made by his mother, Hannah Haley Miner, wife of Manessah Miner. Blue and white stripe fabric, "blue drill," (cotton with fibers of flax). The heavy lining is linen. A story is told that Hannah Miner wove the fabric from flax grown on the family farm. Coat has stand-up "Beau Brummell", Napoleonic style) collar. Buttons in front are missing. Valuable metal buttons no doubt removed when coat was too damaged to wear. Fine hand sewing throughout. Interior pockets in tails are typical for this style. Front pocket flaps are decorative.
