Civil War Uniform of Union Officer's Shell Jacket Hand sewn navy wool jacket with coarsely woven linen liniing sleeves lined with cotton fabric of blue stripe design unspun wool between lining and burlap interfacing 10 button front closure, one button missing metal buttons with spread eagle and striped shield indicates officer 3 large chevrons pointing downward on red wool ground, indicates rank of Sergeant in Artillery Left front slanted pocket and inside left chest pocket 2 button closure at 3 1/2 inch split sleeve edge, 3 buttons missing 2 1/2 inch collar with metal loop at right collar seam
