Scope and Content

This photograph collection primarily consists of the Hall and Williams family and their extended relations of Chester County, Pennsylvania. At some point in the 20th century the family and photographs extend to Meadville of Crawford County, Pennsylvania.

Context

Two photographs, the first of Rosanna B. Smith Hall (1836-1905) by her porch in Meadville, Crawford County, PA labeled “Aunt Rosie and her two sisters”. Rosanna is on the left and her sister Adaline "Addie" Smith Beatty (b.1837) is in the middle. She had at least three other sisters: Sarah Ann Smith (1832-1917), Margaret Smith Pitts (1834-1899), and Maria Smith Ellsworth (1841-1909). Maria lived in Crawford County, PA like Rosanna and Addie. Also, her children are featured elsewhere in the album and collection. The other two lived out-of-state, so Maria seems most likely. The second photograph is of Rosanna B. Smith Hall (right) and her sister Addie Beatty (left) on a bridge. Photographs 79 through 91 in the Local Families Photograph Collection are housed in an album (c. 1900), glued onto black paper. This type of album first gained popularity around the turn of the century. The focus of the album is the family of Rosanna B. Smith Hall (1836-1905) and Thomas T. Hall (1813-1885). Thomas was no longer alive when it was produced. Rosanna's daughters Flora DeEtta Hall (1858-1932) and Lulu Mabel Hall (1863-1937) along with relatives on the Smith side of the family are prominently featured. The original owner of the album is unknown, though they refer to Rosanna and her sister Adaline "Addie" Smith Beatty (1837-1905) as "Aunt." Due to the large quantity of photographs owned by Amy Ida Williams Glisson (Rosanna's niece, 1857-1944) in the Local Families Photograph Collection and Amy's connections to the Smith Family visible in other photographs, it is possible that the album belonged to her, though Addie is technically not her aunt.
