Sharpless Worrall, correspondence (1841-1882)

1. Letter from John T. Huddleston (1/3): Feb. 20th 1841 Letter from John T. Huddleston [Whig Senator in Pennsylvania Senate who served in 1841 and represented Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery Districts] about the "Bill for the protection of insectivorous birds" being passed by the [Pennsylvania] House of Representatives and going to the Senate. Huddleston proposed an amendment to the bill to include the townships of Aston, Concord, Middletown, and Thornbury in Delaware County and Upper Hourr[?] Marion [Upper Marion?] in Montgomery County and hopes it meets Sharpless's approval and will remove the necessity for his petitioning. Huddleston also mentions the suspension of the "resumption law of last session" and the governor [David Rittenhouse Porter] intimating at vetoing all laws "favourable to the Banks"; sent from Harrisburg, PA to Ivy Mills, PA.

Scope and Content

During the 1840s, Sharpless Worrall moved with his family to Sugartown in Willistown Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, where he took over ownership of a general store and served as postmaster for 20 years. Upon his retirement, Worrall's son-in-law Hillery John took over the store, which he ran until his death. At that point it was taken over by Hillery's son, Clyde B. John, who eventually turned the business into an antiques shop. Worrall and John family papers and business records, 1830-1939, primarily consist of the business records of the general store under all three owners as well personal and family papers relating to the Worrall and John families. Sharpless Worrall (1811-1887), the son of Peter Worrall (1768-1831) and Hannah Sharpless (1777-1858) was born in Middletown, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. In 1833, he married Abigail Thatcher (b. 1814), daughter of Thomas Thatcher and Hannah Palmer of Aston, Pa. The couple had several children including Hannah Worrall (1851-1932), who in 1874 married Hillery John (1845-1904), the son of Jacob E. John (1815-1873) and Minerva White (1818-1890).
