Title

Letter from John G. Locke to G.M. Fessenden (1852)

Description

Locke writes that his family’s history is founded on “tradition” and is not conclusive. Tradition states that either a John or Joseph Locke (probably Joseph) came from Scotland to Block Island. He was sold, along with others, to pay for the passage. He then married Marcy Honeywell and they had sons Joseph and Edward, as well as a daughter called Marcy. Locke writes that no dates are given, but it was likely not much before 1700. He also writes that in 1652 a company of 300 people went to Boston from Block Island. One of those people was possibly Jonathan Locke, who in about 1728 was in Newport. Jonathan’s mother and uncle might be ancestors of the RI Locke family. In this company, there were 8 people with the name Monroe who went on to reside in Lexington, MA. The other’s are said to have gone to Bristol, RI. Locke writes for Fessenden’s views on the “tradition”.
