Advertisement for passage "California And the Gold Regions'" from July 20, 1849

Description

One hundred and seventy five years ago, on July 20, 1849, this broadside informed the locals that Luther Borden, the master and part owner of the ship Chariot, which had previously served as a whaling ship, would be headed to “the Gold Regions” in California in early August. Gold had been discovered at Sutter’s Mill early in the previous year on January 28, 1848. On the broadside the ship’s owners proposed that once they arrived in San Francisco, the master would provide the prospecting supplies the passengers would need to form a cooperative mining venture for the “mutual benefit of all concerned”. The ship was 110 feet long, had two decks and three masts, and was built in Newburyport, Massachusetts in 1823. At the time of the trip to the West Coast, the Chariot had already plied the oceans on whaling trips from Warren for more than 16 years. It had pursued the valuable mammals as far away as New Zealand. In 1837 it brought back a very large haul: 2400 barrels of whale oil. The ship’s registration was later surrendered at Honolulu. To those who intend embarking for the Gold Regions, either for mining or other pursuits, this affords a rare opportunity, especially to those who may wish to join the proposed company.
