This is another photo taken by John Trott, the photographer in Warren who ran his studio at the corner of Market and Main Streets during the 1860s.
Major Alfred Bosworth Gardner had his picture taken in his Civil War uniform sometime after 1863 when he appeared on the draft rolls. He sports sideburns, the facial hair style popularized by General Burnsides, although he didn’t include the traditional mustache.
Gardner was born in 1832 and entered his father’s hardware business as a clerk. He lived with his parents as late as 1860 and married Harriet Crowly in 1862. He survived the War and returned to the hardware business. His daughter, Alice, was born in 1874. He later became a banker, and at the time of his death in 1911, he lived at 114 Main Street. Both he and Harriet are buried at the South Burial Ground.
