Description

Here we see the face of a tall case clock designed by Edward Spalding that graces the main floor of the George Hail Library. Born in Connecticut in 1732, he moved to Providence when he was young and apprenticed as a clockmaker. By the age of 21, he was already producing his own clocks, making him one of Providence's earliest clockmakers. In 1757, he married Audrey Stafford, with whom he had three children. His son, Edward Jr., studied the craft under him. When the Revolutionary War broke out, Spalding took a break from clock making to serve in the military, first as a Captain and eventually rising to the rank of Major. He resumed making clocks after the war until his death in 1785. Several of Spalding's prized clocks still stand today. Aside from the one here at the Library, Edward Spalding's masterful work is displayed as far away as the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston-Bayou Bend in Texas.
