By the Honorable [Josias Lyndon] Esquire, Governor and Captain-General of the English Colony of Rhode-Island, and Providence Plantations, in New England, in America. To [James Adams] Gent. Greeting. You [James Adams] being by the General Assembly of this Colony, elected and chosen to the Place and Office of Ensign of the Second Company, or Train'd Band, of the Town Warren in the County of Bristol in the Colony aforesaid , are herby in Name of His Most Sacred Majesty GEORGE the Third by the Grace of GOD, King of Great-Britain, and so forth, authorized, empowered, and commissionated, to have, take, and exercise the Office of Ensign of the Company under your Command, or such Part thereof as you shall deem sufficient, and with them, to the utmost of your Skill and Ability, you are to resist, expel, kill, and destroy the same, in order to preserve the Interest of His Majesty and His good Subjects in these Parts. You are also to follow such further Instructions and Directs as shall from Time to Time be given forth, either by the General Assembly, the Governor and General Council, or other your superior Officers : And for your so doing, this shall be a sufficient Warrant.
