Scope and Content

This covered and bound paperboard ledger was used several times over its "life." In the 1840s it recorded the professional and household exchanges of the John Maus. It later captured his personal feelings, written in the cover pages. Of note, on the front cover is an inscription from John Maus: "Old Abraham Lincoln is dead and rotten done to hell [crossed out] a ball of cotton." At the end of the ledger, presumably in the original hand entered on November 30, 1848, is a listing of apple trees by their variety. According to the temporary Deposit Receipt, "John F. Maus, lived on Farm 1 mile north of Silver run on Littlestown Pike".
