Ribbon, fraternal. Commemorating the Wilson Post of the Grand Army of the Republic in Baltimore, Maryland. Black silk ribbon with decorative gold fringe on the bottom. Decorated on the ribbon are two small American flags crossed with a red, white, and blue ribbon tying them together. Embossed text reads “WILSON POST, NO. 1 G.A.R / BALTIMORE, MD.” Belonged to Mary Bostwick Shellman, who was an honorary member of the post.Context
Mary Bostwick Shellman was recognized for her dedication to Civil War veterans by being elected an honorary Comrade of Wilson Post No. 1 of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) in Baltimore. This was a significant honor, as she was one of the few women to receive such a title. Sources indicate she was elected by ballot as an honorary Comrade in 1872 and affectionately hailed as "Comrade Mary", though one source also mentions she was made an associate member of Wilson Post No. 1 in 1900, still referred to as "Comrade Mary". Her work on behalf of Civil War veterans also led to honorary memberships in other veterans' associations.Acquisition
